TORA 2015 Announcement

TORA Offices - 3/10/14

Today TORA is proud to release details of it's initial 2015 activities. For the first time, TORA participants will be able to take part in championships featuring the best British circuits on the much anticipated new title, Project CARS from this Winter.

Why Project CARS?
TORA has always strived to bring the most realistic racing championships available.
We firmly believe that Project CARS provides us with a unique opportunity to not only bring new championships to the virtual racing community but also work with the best national and international series to represent them in the virtual sphere.
With a huge raft of real word circuits maticulously recreated and dozens of cars, Project CARS allows us to build on our expanding virtual racing world.

With that in mind we are proud to present two of our anticipated championships for Slighty Mad Studios' new title, Project CARS, starting in Winter 2015.

TORA GT Championship 2015
For the first time in TORA history, the premier GT series will take place on Project CARS. Based on the highly competitive British GT Championship, TORA GT brings together high powered sports cars with the most challenging circuits Britain has to offer.
The championship has a long standing link with TORA as it was the original inspiration for the TORA GT Championship, now entering it's 13th season.
The TORA British GT Championship will bring together cars from Audi, Aston Martin, Bentley, BMW, Ginetta, Mercedes, Nissan and Porsche (RUF) to compete at Britain's greatest circuits.

TORA President Matt Hunter;
"As the inspiration behind TORA's founding series, the opportunity to emulate the fantastic British GT Championship for the first time with the real cars and circuits is a massive opportunity for us.
We hope we can take this opportunity to show real and virtual fans alike why the British series is the best domestic sports car series in the world".

TORA Endurance Championship 2015
The 2015 TEC will make full use of Project CARS' full weather and day/night cycles to bring even more realism to the endurance events and it's associated coverage.
TORA will also be bringing new events to console racing for the first time.

Daytona 24 - The iconic opener to the US racing season arrives at TORA for the first time on Project CARS. Entrants will also be able to enjoy the preceding 'Roar Before the 24' test, all in real time and with full weather and time transition.

Bathurst 12 - This relative newcomer to the endurance calendar has captured the imagination of sports car fans all over the world and attracted some of the world's best to compete in this gruelling once around the clock event to conquer Mount Panorama.

Le Mans 24 - TORA's blue ribband event returns with full weather and day/night transition. Prepare for the focussing experience of nearly 200mph on the Mulsanne Straight at the dead of night. This race is going to be special!

Spa 24 - The premier racing event for GT3 and GT4 cars makes it long awaited debut at TORA. The weather in this region of Europe is notoriously fickle and rain is a constant threat. Can you tame Eau Rouge at night?

Silverstone 12 - The home of British motorsport and TORA's spiritual home, Silverstone plays host to the 12hrs multiclass race in Britain's early Autumn.
If the race is anything like the last two encounters this will be yet another classic.

Nurburgring 24 - The 2015 TORA racing calendar will conclude with the most challenging race of the year. Twice around the clock at the most iconic racing circuit on the planet.

The media output will continue to be a mix of our excellent in house talent and the experienced staff at Downforce Radio to whom we offer our thanks for their continuing involvement and support. TORA members can expect some particularly exciting developments in this area as we explore the options open to us with full twenty-four hour coverage of some of the world's greatest endurance races.

More news and championship details will be announced closer to the release of this much anticipated title.

TORA 2015 Announcement :: Comments

Its not that the move is un-welcomed, its the idea of moving the main TORA series to a game that frankly no one knows if it is any good on console. Especially when those series are and can raced fine on FM5 and even FM4.

Project CARS... I have heard some great things and not so great things.

I have seen videos and comments about this game that bring joy and despair to my ears. The handling, the developers, the features are all included in that.

Slightly Mad Studios only have one credible game to their name. Need For Speed Shift. Shift 2 was a horrible game, Test Drive: Ferrari Racing Legends drove EXACTLY the same as Shift 2. Bike Bash was just... (Insert unexplainable phrase here.) And with them having 2 titles being released this year. P: CARS and World of Speed, I don't have high hopes.

Let's hope their game engine is nothing like it used to be. As that was the thing that let it down. The damage is like "HOLY MEATBALLS!!!!" The driving experience was like "GET ME OUT OF HELL!!".

I am a bit tipsy on this subject. Let's hope they can prove us all wrong and not make it turn out like Shift. They need to rid of the Frostbite engine... Make their own. THEN we might be getting somewhere.

Sorry for the essay...

You can't really use the Shift series as it was considered an EA game. And EA aren't exactly good when it comes to racing games.

Take away Shift and what exactly has SMS done to warrant ANY merit to them?

I admire PCars ambition and yes FM5 was disappointing but i think there is room for both on here. Let the numbers do the talking when PCars comes out, if people stick with FM5 keep the events that way, Likewise for PCars.

As for FM4, yes it is a far more expansive title than FM5 but I am on XBONE so cant comment on its continuity. I see no issue with embracing several titles but a lot of it will come down to staff availability etc.

On the PCars handling area i know the devs have said that tailoring sensitivity, deadzone etc is in the hands of the user, now i know thats vague but i'm all for it.

This isn't Shift, there is nothing left of it in PCARS, nothing, they carn't be because EA own Shift and it's assets. In addition it doesn't use the frostbite engine it's Slightly Mad's own engine (The Madness Engine), it also seems my statement about how PCARS is developed has gone right over some peoples heads

Yeah, I've given pCARS a go on the PC (with a wheel) but it still handled well. It's not an iRacing or rFactor but it's definitely good fun and the graphics are amazing. Like, jaw dropping in some scenarios.

I would certainly put it with AC, iRacing, RF2 than Forza and GT

If it indeed is iRacing for the console with epic graphics, I will have to find some way to afford the new console.

However, given the lump sum of game + console, I am taking the precautionary route of "wait and see".

while all the responses have been great, polite and constructive from the community, i think we are left wondering what are the reasons from staff who were behind the decision to what and why the switch? what are the alternative plans in place?

but most importantly, why can't the community have any say in helping choose which direction to go and why for any of TORA's events and series?

The community can organize whatever they want for TORA on Forza. The championships which the STAFF run is up to their judgement on where they want to do it.

This is really no place for a debate over personal opinion on where they should do what they're going to do. Take it up with Matt through PM.

So the community could set up its own ISCC on Forza 4 if the they want to?

Two thoughts:

I don't have an Xbone, but from everything I've read and been told by friends, the servers are pretty bad at times. Glitches in the chat and party systems, long wait times to set up or join lobbies. I know over at VM it has taken up to an hour to get a race lobby up and running, and then sometimes it crashes. PCARS could be the greatest racing game ever made to date, but if MS doesn't get their sh*t together on the server side, it will all be for naught.

I also fear the the game will further divide the racing community as we know it, much like FM5 did. FM4 is at the end of it's life cycle unfortunately, though it's still the best format for what we do here, FM5 was a disappointment to say the least. Many I know are already planning on making the jump to PC for PCARS or Iracing. I'm not sure that any league can get significant numbers trying to support two or three platforms and three different games.

With all it's reported problems and a complete lack of any games I'm interested in, I have not been motivated to switch to the next gen console. I would love to be able to race more, but to date every site I belong to is heavily Euro based, which I cannot do. I'm taking a wait and see stance for the moment, but I'm seriously considering moving to PC racing myself, simply because of the lack of opportunities on the console.

For those of us who bought the proper next gen console (PS4) will there be a project cars series on there?

Mako,

From a server stand point and those delays you speak of. I don't want jinx it but we haven't even those issues on a common or even sporadic case.

So...

SMS also was an associate for Simbin, who made the GTR series, which was basically the iracing during its day.

I wouldn't recommend such a massive undertaking. Shocked

If online is any good, judging by this 10 second long video, TEC @ Nurburgring next year should be orgasmic.

Soundwave, you clearly know how this works, you're a community member here. First of all, the staff explained the switch in the opening paragraph of their announcement, so go back to it. Second of all, a staff takes the general consensus from the community in as well as their own opinions, then make a decision. I know you know this. The majority of people posting in this thread have been expressing their approval, therefore, the staff made the right decision at this time. You don't agree with them and that's fine. You're right that it is wise not to count your chickens before they hatch, but that being said, there's reason to believe this game will be great. The hype is there for a reason. The game was developed with our community in mind and it looks to be checking all the right boxes.

FM5 has been a mess. It may drive well, but the server issues and lack of features (content as well) leaves lots to be desired.

As long as it's not a bug-riddled mess, it will succeed. Personally, I think if pCars is a dud, console racing leagues will shrivel up and disappear. There's no alternative listed because there are not many options if this fails. Attendance has been dismal across the board, and FM5 is too broken to keep on with for another year. Attendance will be further split by pCars, regardless if it's a success or not. Maybe FM6 will solve some issues, but that's at least a year away, we need something soon to maintain our attention in racing on the console.
