Re: Connection Speeds
Yeah, that's the short long short name. It's really called Farmers Telephone Cooperative. And they have a monopoly on reliable internet, television, and phone connections here. Getting any other service and you pay more, plus you still need a phone. And FTC is the only company that gives phone service in my area.
The only alternatives are Dish Network or DirecTV which offer satellite internet and television that gets knocked out at the smallest of clouds blocking the signal. Florida was so much better with the offerings of Brighthouse and Verizon (and some other companies that I can't remember right now).
But all of them have a hefty cap on download and upload speeds. Less than most other countries.

Re: Connection Speeds
You're eventually going to need the speed anyhow. Right now the companies over here seem to be ahead of the curve but everything is catching up. When the next console is released it could really put a damper on people with slower speeds the same way Xbox Live eventually did with the dial up connections. I remember playing Halo with one before they got high speed here.FranchittiFan wrote:To be honest id base buying a house on the internet connection speeds as I love online racing as much as my kids lol
The new televisions coming will force the cable and satellite companies to upgrade as well. The new 4K or UltraHD tv's are 3840x2160 and the Sony version is 84 freaking inches (at 25k!). As the price comes down so will the tv's most of us own now so the tech will filter to everyone. To a lesser extent, because I could see it killing off is 3D but you never know. People are running tv, pc's that drain more and more, telephones, tablets, etc, etc.

I get 11-16 and I can race and stream at the same time. As long as the connection is stable, you should be fine.

Re: Connection Speeds
ADSL speeds mean you get a rubbish upload speed (c. 1mbps which is only good for 360p/480p). That is going to be the main issue for streaming (especially HD streams) as 720p streams at 2-3mbps usually (depending on compression settings).
Down speed shouldn't be an issue unless you are trying to
watch multiple HD streams.
There is a site detailing when certain areas are due to get fibre optic installed (lots of government money involved) but i'm posting from my phone on a very quiet night shift ane can't remember the site right now.

Re: Connection Speeds
Ah very interesting Chris, good to have someone with similar figures. How long does it squally to take you to download something, or more importantly stream something?
If you could get that site Luke I would appreciate it, is see BT Infinity as a list and that my town is being upgraded in 2013 but it doesn't detail exactly where.

Re: Connection Speeds
Something else to look for, is if there is a daily download/upload limit on a location with limited speeds. Thats what got me during Le Mans

Hmmm good point, what's your sort of connection speeds Simon and who are you with? You can stream and race pretty well at the same time.

Re: Connection Speeds
BT Infinity is a good one to go for imho, as it's constantly being boosted, and you're always put onto the fastest they have (if you go for the top unlimited package anyway, like me). So apparently I'm in line for 100Mb very soon as they're updating around my area at the moment!
Currently streaming is near instantaneous and no buffering.
I guess download partly depends on upload speed from the host site, but I can grab a 1+ Gb movie in about 40mins.
I'm on unlimited (have to be because I seriously rape download limits otherwise! According to BT, my monthly average usage is 97Gb but I know for sure I've been waaaay over that some months!) plus on the package I'm on, there's no peak time throttling either.

Re: Connection Speeds
BT Infinity isn't in my area at all but as I said they are coming to Falkirk in March. The house I'm looking at is a new build and Infinity may not venture into them (Virgin Media and Sky both refuse to put fibre lines into new estates for some reason) and the house will be partly built then, so I'm not sure if it'll happen. I really don't understand why these companies don't put their most state of the art lines into brand new housing estates, must be a cost thing. I asked the agents yesterday about it but they couldn't answer much, would be best to talk to the site manager I suppose.
